STEPHEN'S PLAYLIST

ANNE MARIE'S PLAYLIST

STEPHEN TO ANNE MARIE:

SB: What is your favorite song?

AM: I really vibed with Good for Us this month by Lydia Persaud.

SB: Have you heard any of these tracks before?

AM: Just TESSEL, Call Me — which I, too, had this month. Still blows my mind that doesn’t happen more often…

SB: This might not be a question you can answer just yet, but do you have a song or songs that you already know are going into a future movie? If so, is there a particular moment you’re already envisioning for it?

AM: This is a nutty question because the answer is yes and I have hundreds of songs saved that I want to put into movies in the future... The recent one that comes to mind is Little Simz, Point and Kill, which you dropped on me last year here on KC and is one that keeps bouncing around in my head. I think that one could become pretty iconic, especially if it’s used ironically to contrast what’s happening on screen instead of just for like a walk and talk or something simple.

Pulling songs for the future is almost like pulling shots as a director. For me, personally, I find that it’s something that happens as you work, even in the very early stages, and then when you get down river, you already have a bank as a starting point. You might not use any of them on that particular project but it’s so crucial and nice to have. Because the reverse is getting into pre-pro or post and having nothing to start with, and you and your collaborators are scrambling to “watch a bunch of stuff” or “listen to a bunch of stuff” (which takes tons of time) under the gun, and all the while the thought haunts you that you know you came across something back in the day that could help you but you don’t know what it was and you didn’t save it.

ANNE MARIE TO STEPHEN:

AM: What is your favorite song?

SB: I gotta give it to Scarlett by Holly Humberstone. There are a lot of great vibey songs on this playlist, but for some reason that crackling synth sound in the background that kicks in at the 2:08 mark takes the cake.

AM: Have you heard any of these tracks before?

SB: Nope. A few of the artists (which I’m of course regretting not burning sooner), but not the songs.

AM: For you personally, what do you think the hardest parts of a rock and roll life on the road would be if you were a famous musician who had to tour a lot to fan the flame of success? The fame? Life on a bus? The money? The fake fans? The drugs? The booze? The women?

SB: I don’t know about you, but you just named a lot of great things in that list so I might have to think more about the negatives. Definitely life on the road away from friends/family for longer periods of time would be hard, but I’d probably say for me it would be the fact I couldn’t go anywhere without getting mugged by paparazzi or fans wanting selfies. [oh wait, is Stephen about to once again tie it back to Daft Punk, ya damn right he is] It’s one reason why if I could, I’d go the helmet/mask route. So I could be able to walk around in peace, go to my kids’ soccer games, go to dinner, etc and not be accosted by everyone. Would hate to be scared to go outside. Probably why I dropped the musical pursuit a while back. Saw it was heading to super stardom and had to shut it down out of self preservation.
