STEPHEN TO ANNE MARIE:

SB: What is your favorite song?

AM: Gonna go with Mahal by Glass Beams here. I can see an action scene playing out to this one! I smell a redemption arc…

SB: Have you heard any of these tracks before?

AM: Nope. Goddammit.

SB: I’m starting to mess around with this old 1970s Kowa camera and it made me think of some of the most iconic and memorable photographs of musicians. What are some shots of musicians that made an impression on you?

AM: This question is so hard, because I actually feel like iconic photos of musicians is probably something I am a little out of the loop on. I spend more time looking at movie stills…

I know there’s a famous B&W photo of Stan Getz under a building light with his sax in an alley that I love and hope to one day have a print of. I also remember going to see Jim Marshall’s B&W jazz photographs at a gallery here in LA a few years ago…and they blew me away. All kinds of candid snaps of Miles and the Count and Steve McQueen and others, just hanging out. Apparently, Marshall is known for his rock photography and this collection is like not as popular so the prices were very reasonable? No, I did not indulge. But let’s just say it’s on the wish list!

I’ve always been a fan of candids more than fashion photos… like I love that photo of Chirstopher Walken as a kid in his parents’ bakery in New York City way before he found success as an actor. Any photo that captures a tension between what you imagine as a voyeur that person was thinking about their life on the day it was taken, versus what you now know happened in their life in hindsight later on, I’m here for it.

SB: Wow, what a lineup. Not making it easy on me. I gotta give the nod to Don’t Know What’s Normal by Shintaro Sakamoto. What a vibe!

SB: Only Blood Sugar and I Only Want You, but I’m a big Masego fan that now you’ve sent me back down a listening rabbit hole.
