ANNE MARIE'S PLAYLIST

STEPHEN'S PLAYLIST

ANNE MARIE TO STEPHEN:

AM: What is your favorite song?

SB: Gotta go with Girls by Vetta Borne.

AM: Have you heard any of these tracks before?

SB: Only one I've heard before is Greyson Chance.

AM: Quincy Jones is one of the most prolific music producers/composers of all time. Sometimes I find myself watching an old movie and randomly see his name in the credits and it makes me smile. He seems like a guy who not only loves to work, but tried to find ways to say yes to projects instead of no to them.

Name one or two musicians from back in the day who were around before the the heyday of the movie business really incorporating music and hiring true music producers with latitude (like Quincy) to score movies — musicians who are known historically as exceptional musicians but who you would have loved to see take a real crack at composing? Who else would have been in the Quincy club, if they’d been born at the right time?

SB: Great question, so this is gonna take a second. First, in order to answer effectively, I think we need to preface the type of musician we're looking for. While my inclination would be to start with my favorite performers, there's a big difference between being a good singer/performer and having the musical knack and ear for arrangements, sound engineering and instrumental components needed for scoring. If you look at it through that lens, then some of the usual suspects miss the cut. Next, we have to consider the type of movie. Not everyone is able to create soundscapes for everything. Who's remaining (for me at least) is a select group of cats. For my small town tales, give me James Taylor. For the sultry spy thrillers, I'll Stan Getz. For the upbeat romcoms my man Stevie Wonder will hold things down. Taking it a step further, the romance sagas can only be Edith Piaf. For 100 degree summer dramas spent mostly cruising, Carlos Santana won't let us down. But my biggest winner who I think could have and would have been a force like Mr Jones is the one and only Marvin Gaye. His music always felt/feels like an experience and a story more than anything. Within seconds, you find yourself lost and along for the ride not wanting it to end.

STEPHEN TO ANNE MARIE:

SB: What is your favorite song?

AM: Get Precious, Yukon Blonde

SB: Have you heard any of these tracks before?

AM: WizKid, Yukon Blonde, otherwise nah.

SB:  I'm starting to mess around with beat making. You know, in my spare time between 1am and 2am. For inspiration, I've been watching all kinds of production videos and it got me thinking, if you could produce a song with 3 current producers, who would they be?

AM: Quincy Jones, the Neptunes, and, on the other end of the spectrum, Brian Eno.
